Motorheadbangers Everywhere!!

Sorry for missing the newsletter last week. I was out of town catching a couple of Alice Cooper shows last weekend and Jeff Beck this weekend! Anyway, here is the stuff....

Over the past 3 years that I have been running the Motorhead website, one request that has been made by thousands of fans was to offer merchandise for sale online. Well, after much deliberation, I have opened the Motorheadshop and stocked it with a few goodies. There will be more items to come in the near future.

I spoke to Lemmy last week and asked him about the status of his much talked about and anticipated biography. He said that the principle writing is completed and that it is now in the hands of the editor. He also mentioned that big league publishers Simon & Schuster will be releasing it, likely next year.

SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intellidence) is a program that was initiated by the US Government some years ago to study the radio waves that are transmitted from space. The idea being that if there was life on another planet, they might try to send us radio signals. But, gathering the data for SETI has been easier then actually crunching it through the computers and analysising it. So, with the advent of the internet, they have decided to solicite the help of the millions of PC owners out there to help in the search for life on other planets.

I think it is a really cool notion to have the entire universe listening to Motorhead someday. But first, we gotta find them! So, if you are interested in participating, just head on over to http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu and download the screen saver software that analyses the data from the radio telescopes. All the instructions and details are there.

Now, we want our rather loud voices to be heard! To this end, SETI also has allowed groups to combne the efforts of computer owners to show relative rankings in participation. In other words, who has crunched the most data! So, I have created a group for all of us Motorheadbangers! After you have signed up for the SETI@home project, mosey on over to the groups section located at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/team_list.html. Once you are there, use the search engine to find the group called Motorheadbangers. Follow the instructions there on how to contribute your efforts to the group.

Lets show the world that Motorhead fans can do their part!

It seems that the South America dates are not going to happen. According to Lemmy, the promoter down there couldn't get the details hammered down soon enough to make the tour happen. I am trying to get updated tour dates but have had little success. I know that some of these are incorrect so be sure to check with Ticketmaster or your local sources.

Now that it looks like the first Internet tribute album will be released exclusive to visitors of the official website. So, I would like to initiate plans to produce a sequel! There haver already been several bands that have contacted me and expressed interest in participating. So, heres the idea...

Any of you out there that are part of a band that loves to play Motorhead tunes, how would you like to contribute a song? The songs would intially available only as Real Audio files on the official website. The first tribute got listened to by over 5000 people. Here is your chance to get your band heard playing songs by your favorite band!

I have already had several bands email their interest... but we need more. If you are interested, please send me an email to acetrump@bigfoot.com. Make sure that subject of the email is "OS Tribute 2". I will send out a seperate email to the bands with details about the project so that it doesn't clutter up the list. Oh, and I promise that it will take NO WHERE near as long to get this one up and running!

Just to let everybody know - "March or Die" was the first Motorhead CD I ever purchased. I don't even remember why I bought it - probably because Ozzy did a song on it. But it remains one of my favorite Motorhead CD's to this day. "Stand" is a killer song and I would love to hear the guys do it live some day. And the title track is the best song ever to listen to when you're in a pissed-off mood. The one funny thing about the disc is when you listen to the Lemmy/Ozzy duet on "I Ain't No Nice Guy Anymore" it is almost a note-for-note copy of "Knocking on Heaven's Door". I would have to say my least favorite album is "Iron Fist".

Yesss, yesss you motorheadbangers out there!!! Let's help Mr Cap'n Klegg - Torgo on that OS #74 question about the hawks. Lemmy's relation with Hawkwind was kinda He came, saw, conquered. Arrived recording the lead vocals to "Silver Machine", the band's all-time greatest hit. This is on the In Search of Space remastered UK CD (bonus tr.) or compilations (Stasis being the best). On the '72 album Doremi Fasol Latido he sings his own "The Watcher" . On BBC Live he blows a killer "S. Machine" again. '74 album Hall of the Mountain Grill has the masterpiece "Lost Johnny". And '75's Warrior on the Edge of Time CD has as a bonus track the greatest treasure of them all: "Motorhead", the original single version, b-side to the equally killer "Kings of speed". I'm only counting lead vocals on official albums, and maybe even forgot some. All of their stuff is worth having anyway. In time: look out for the Hawkwind '92 unoff. release The Friday Rock Show Sessions from an '86 show. Lemmy guests (uncredited) singing "Silver Machine" in an amazing assault of force!!! Don't forget '73's Space Ritual... Thanks for the patience...

Hi Motrpeople!

Guess who likes Motrhead, Alan Cox, one of the main developers of Linux, a free (as freedom) operating system (http://www.linux.org).

Question made to Alan Cox:
If you were stranded on a desert island, what ten albums and ten books would you want with you?

I thought about this one. Its a hard question, and also the books you pick to re-read are not always the ones you pick for being best. I'd have to take Cryptonomicon with me to finish, Snowcrash too. Also Ubik, which I tend to think is Philip K Dick's best book.

Cheesy tactless Amazon link as http://www.linux.org.uk is an Amazon Associcate. Oh yeah "In association with
Amazon.com" as they insist it says that 8)

On the music side probably one of the Motorhead collections, some Hawkwind, Ozzy "R Rhoads Tribute" and
then some folk stuff - Fairport Convention, Show Of Hands, Madra Rua. from http://www.uk.linux.org/diary/ at September 3rd.

It's always good to see great people saying they like a great band as Motrhead. I'm waiting to see the guys in Brasil this time.

Also, I want to ask, Ace, if you can release future songs in mp3 format, instead of (or along with) RealAudio. The only Real Players for Linux are old and not supported anymore, and the requirements for the new Real softwares are just too much, besides there are free mp3 players and encoders.

If you want a Motorhead T-shirt get the one from Ace or go to a show and get one. I bought a second hand t-Shirt in 1986 and the damn thing fell apart after one washing. It serves me right for not buying one that supports the band financially. I have one or two from every show since 1985 that are official and they have stood the test of time except for a few bullet holes but those are to be expected after 10 years of wear.

Maybe you 'll hate me forever, but I think "Ace of Spades" the weakest album from MHead. I said WEAK, not BAD or something like that. I think the riffs are so-so and some of the songs are too similar, looks like they made just one shape to build some of the melodies and chord progressions. "Dance" and "Fire Fire" sound to me like two versions for the same idea, understand?

Dear fellow compatriot.
I am a true fan of Motorhead and music in general. The March or Die album conceders to be one of the most technical and musical motorhead albums. The lyrics are great, the music is great, even the song "cat scratch fever" sounds better from motorhead than from ted nugget. If you want to say what album is below standards I should say "Another Perfect Day". March or Die a legendarary LP and I don't want to hear crapp like this. Song like, hellraizer, i ain't no mr nice guy, bad religion, cat scratch fever, march or die are hymns to my ears. So cut the bullshit and listen to Motorhead like a real fan.

> Let me hear you!

Well, a good question, at least it's more original than ' which album/song is the best ' ! Lemmy himself says that the weakest albums of MOTORHEAD are "Iron Fist" (you were absolutely right) and "On Parole".He says that if it were for him, he would never release "On Parole",but record company had all the rights on that album...As for the songs, he says that the worst ones are 'Talking Head', 'Bang To Rights' and 'America' and the best ones are 'Ace Of Spades' , 'Bomber' and 'Stay Clean' - he loves these ones most of all. As for me, I don't like much "Bomber" album,it has some good songs, but overall it's too slow for me.Also I don't like "Another Perfect Day" (but 'Shine', 'Dancing On Your Grave' and 'Back At The Funny Farm' are exellent!) and 'March Or Die' - this one don't have REAL MOTORHEAD guts in it. All that I wrote is a matter of taste, I realise quite well that there are a lot of people that wouldn't agree with me.But the only thing I want to say is that we love MOTORHEAD not for the single albums, but as a band in general, and every band has it's high points and...eergh...not very high points in it's career and if the band releases a weak album it doesn't mean that you become no longer a fan, REAL fans stay TRUE to the band and support band in any case. That's what I think. Thanks for the interesting question!

Ahoy Motorheadbangers!

On the subject of weak albums, it seems like March Or Die is the only one that any of us would perhaps maybe possibly consider as moderately weak [relatively speaking]. Well, as a Motorhead student, I would suggest that the status of this album is not so much the fault of Motorhead, but was due largely to the frustrating and uncertain situation on the drum throne at that time. According to an interview I read some time ago, they began recording MOD with Philthy - but it didn't work out. How can even the mightiest of bands be expected to kick total ass in a situation like that? The astounding difference between MOD and Bastards shows you just what the right drummer can bring out of a band - and conversely, how a drummer addicted to glue sniffing [well, not really] can almost destroy a band. Poor Philthy never quite shook of the rust after his return [he barely makes it through "The Wolf" on the brilliant Rock N Roll album].

Anyway, the drumming on the MOD album is an interesting question. Mikkey Dee is thanked as a guest musician in the credits, yet who really played on the album remains unclear. I've read that Philthy is really on some of the tracks, and Mikkey on others. Also I've heard that the drums were played by Randy Castillo, and some say it was even Tommy Aldridge. Does anyone know exactly what was happening behind the kit during the recording of this album?

the world didn't end after all, did it? good for us, a bit emberassing to the new agers ;-) hm....early hawkwind has a lot of lemmy doing backing vox... as for lead vocals, there are a few there as well, and i will check into the matter..... silver machine (their only hit-single) has great overdubs by lemmy (it was originally sung (live at the roundhouse) by calver/turner (tripped out of their minds!!!) and then over-dubbed by their newly-recruited bass player, studio-wise). the first lemmy 'wind-album featuring lemmy, do-remi-fasol-latido, has "the watcher" (yes, it's from '72, kids!) eerily sung by lemmy to near-acoustic-sounding backing (by 'imself)... ...oh, and there's been released a live album from '74, "the 1999 party", the only live version of "the watcher" i've heared ..check it out on http://www.cdnow.com after that, he could be heared on greasy truckers lp (live stuff (ok, it's from before do-remi...) and of course the 2 live albums from the space ritual-tour (plus the bbc radio one release (there's a better release of this, but it's a boot..) where lemmy can be heared singing silver machine + backing vox) ...then of course there's some more backing vox on the lps up until hall of the mountain grill ....and then: the b-side to "kings of speed" (did he sing that? ...can't rememeber), namely "motorhead" (sans umlaut) ...there are two version, the other being sung by mr. nik turner. be shocked! it has a violin solo! *grin* i will check into what songs exactely he sang on....watch this space... :-)

oh, and - can somebody lpease help me with more information on Sam Gopal (and his/dream)? ....i've got the 1st press LP, but miss some info on this....great album btw (nearly all tracked written by lemmy - and all songs sung by him), check it out on cd (and tell me where i can get the cd version as well) ....hard psychedelia with tabla drums (and a tender little song sung by lemmy, backed by a triangle(!).

Hi! A couple of years ago I saw the boys play at a place called Circus in Stockholm, Sweden. I think it was on the Sacrifice tour. At the souveneir stand you could buy all the usual stuff - t-shirts, baseball caps, the odd signed drum head AND, this was a bit unusual, black coffee cups (or mugs?) with the Motorhead logo on it in, I believe, white and red. Absolutely sublime! I'd love to have my morning java in one of those! Unfortunately I was broke, so I couldn't buy one. I've seen the band a number of times since and on every occasion I've checked the souveneir stand, but NO! No coffee cups! Such a shame. Any idea where I could get one? I have both versions of this on viynl, and the WIK2 version is the one
with the printed inner sleeve - However they are both black viynl.

Some of the pictures on the inner sleeve are cool - a picture of Lemmy in 1965, without the handlebars, and sporting his grin :-)
