Hello and welcome to the first issue of Overnight Sensation for 1998. I apologize for not sending one last week, but on Christmas Eve, I was in the midsts of downloading my e-mail when suddenly the power supply on my computer gave up the ghost! It took several days for the local repair shop to get in the proper part and I was out of cyber contact for about a week. As most of you can relate, it was tough... no e-mail for a week! Anyway, that little nightmare is past.

I wanted to update you on a few things that I have been promising you and have yet to happen.

* Motorhead Tour Through Time - This live show in Real Audio would be up within the next week or so. Our team here at Next Level has been totally swamped with work and this just got a lower priority.

* Interview With Lemmy - I sent this to our recording studio in Vancouver so that they could clean it up a bit and make it a little more listenable. This should also be available within the next week to ten days.

* Lemmy Speaks - One fortunate thing about my computer going down was that I had backed the Ask Lemmy questions onto my laptop and spent a great deal of time over the Christmas break compiling new questions. I have many new ones to send to Lemmy and will be doing so this weekend. Expect to see new ones on the web page in two to three weeks.

As most of you have noticed, I have been including the info on the tribute album in every issue of Overnight Sensation. It has been a very positive move, bringing in an average of one new band per issue. So, please indulge me, at least for a couple more issues.

The tribute project is coming along nicely. For those of you new to the list, let me recap...

We got into a discussion about the lack of tribute(s) out there in the world honoring our favorite band of bangers, Motorhead! So, being the kind of do-it-yourselfers that we are, we decided, what the hell, let's do it ourselves! The Overnight Sensation list is filled with lots of talented musicians. And, it is not to late for your band to participate. If you would like to contribute a track our Motorhead Tribute Project, please e-mail me at ace@nextlevel.com with the subject line reading OS TRIBUTE: I WANT IN!. I will e-mail you separately with details on submissions. If you are serious, you had better move, the deadline for finished songs is the end of January.

I have gotten lots of great suggestions for the name of our little project. I will be sending out voting ballots either today or tomorrow to all of you so that you can have your say. By the 15th of January, we will have a name and will begin our search for the cover artist(s).

Hi Ace,

It's me Evil Clam, the question man (hehe), again with ( surprise, surprise) some questions for you. :-)
I read in Overnight Sensation #20 that you had a contest for designing the cover for the next Motorhead Album. My question is : When did it happen? I never heard of it. I would have loved to have participated in that contest!
Another thing I'd like to know is : when will the next update to the Motorhead website be done? I'd love to see some more "Lemmy Speaks" Q & A.
Finally, will you be having a contest to design the cover for the tribute CD?
Well, that's all for now..

See ya... Evil Clam

**Editor: Yup, the Design the new Motorhead cover thing did happen. The window of opportunity was very small (about a week). But I got many submissions from list members. I have forwarded all of the ones that arrived in time to the band's management.

I think both of your other questions were answered in my opening address. Talk to you soon !

As a die-hard Ramones fan, with Motorhead a VERY close second, it was sad for me to see the band retire. However, their last concert DID produce a moment of glory that was a personal triumph for me:

I finally got to see LEMMY onstage jamming with the RAMONES! He came out with his giant Rickenbacher and joined them to play his tribute song R.A.M.O.N.E.S. with the boys in black. It was great! Lemmy comes running out after the song's already started, like he was in the john or something, and steps up and starts playing before the crew guy can even get him plugged in - if you listen carefully, you can really hear when Lemmy's bass is added to the mix, it's a little deeper than CJ's. They roar through the song with CJ and Lemmy singing/howling the lyrics.

All this is courtesy of the Ramones new album/video set, We're Outa Here, a film of the last concert in LA, August 1996, mixed with interviews from Lemmy and other notables as well as the band themselves.

I bought the set of video and CD from the CD-NOW online record store for about $20 and think it's a tremendous bargain. (If only that Eddie Vedder faggot wasn't on the album!) Highly recommended.

Ciao -

I believe "nobeard " suggested "all the aces" as a tribute album title, but I have seen that as a greatest hits package (it may be bootleg).

Next, "JPetrush" who did say he was joking, slammed all bands American, and I must admit that many of the true greats are form the U.K. (Priest, Maiden, and of course, Motorhead) let us not forget C.O.C. (from my hometown, Raleigh, NC), Pantera, Slayer, Testament...........

anyway, thanks

First of all, kick ass job on Overnight Sensation! Now then, on to the tribute name... I have a few ideas:
Born to Lose
Don't Let Em Grind Ya Down
Stone Dead Forever (the "Stone Dead" part could be made to look like the MOTORHEAD logo...)
Deaf Forever
Eat the Rich

I'd also like to offer my services to do the layout and design for free (well, maybe you could slip me a few of the fiished CDs...). I have done layout work for Cursed Productions (my own label), Moribund Records, Breath of Night Records, and Pulverizer Records, and would be honored to be involved with a tribute to the greatest band of all time.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Take care, and happy holidays!

Hi all,

Greetings and Happy holidays from FALLOUT.
As one of the bands slated to be on the Motorhead Tribute CD, I thought you might like to know what we sound like. We have just completed the mixing and mastering of our six song demo, and are waiting for the pressing to be finished to release it. However we have made one complete song ( in MP3 format) available on the "Sounds" page of our website. The URL is at the bottom of this post.

We invite everyone to surf on over and sample our music!!

I apologize if this post is inappropriate, but seeing as how we're doing a song for the tribute, I thought that it was relevant to this newsletter. Thanks!

Hi everyone
Does anybody know how old Phil Campbell and Mickey Dee are? What about past band members such as Wurzel, Phil Taylor and Fast Eddie? Year of birth would do just fine. Lemmy is 52 of course. I reckon Phil Campbell must be about 40'ish and Mickey maybe in his mid to late thirties?

Who knows how the name 'Lemmy' originated? I heard that when he started out he was always broke and used to say to people: "Lend me some money". Get it? Can anybody corroborate this?
What about 'Wurzel'? German for 'root'. And what is his real name? Is it Mick, Muck or Micheal Burston?
Last question: who are the Cheltenham Sheepshaggers?

Subject: os: metallica "lemmys" recordings from 50th birthday party.

There have been enquiries here regarding where fans can get hold of audio/video recordings of Lemmy's 50th birthday party at Whiskey A Go Go, where Metallica appeared playing Motorhead covers. I myself am a fan of Metallica (before the "Load period") and Motorhead, so this is something of great interest to me.

I spoke to Lemmy when I met him backstage at London Brixton Academy, in October, and asked him if a video release is in the pipeline. He told me that it has been filmed professionally but he has no say in the matter. It's up to Metallica if they want to release it. Lemmy's seen the video and said that it's very good.

I heard whispers of a bootleg video knocking around but I haven't seen a copy.

As for audio recordings, Metallica have released their set as B-side tracks to their "Hero Of The Day" single. However, these are recordings taken at the rehearsal for the gig and not from the live gig itself. Also, the release is only four of the six tracks. There are no plans of releasing the remaining two tracks, which is why the audience were pretty confused when Lemmy dedicated "Road Crew" to Metallica when Motorhead played at Brixton. Metallica have released another CD called "The Complete Motorhead-Ache" but that's misleading because, again, that's only four of the six tracks.

There are, however, bootlegs going around with the complete Metallica set of all six tracks and they're recorded at the live gig itself. I have a copy of "Hey Hey, We're the Lemmys" a Dutch bootleg. This contains the complete Metallica set, bithday messages to Lemmy, a live "Ace Of Spades" the opening song from the Motorhead set, and some selected tracks from the LA2 pre-Donington Festival secret gig Metallica did in London. Another bootleg is from Japan "20 Years of Motorhead, 50 Years of Lemmy", a double CD which contains the complete birthday party including the complete sets by Metallica and Motorhead. Not only this one the complete recording, I've been told it's of superior sound quality than "Hey hey We're the Lemmys".

Cradle to the Grave

No Sleep 'til Metropolis
No Sleep 'til The Hammer

OK, Iive finally gone thru all of the issues of OS since subscribing in September, and feel compelled to post a message. First off Iid like to commend Ace for all of his efforts. Uniting ehead fans eround the world is no mean feat, and heis done a damn good job! (raising glass)

Second Iid like to say that as I went thru the past issues there were some points of interest that Iid like to comment on. I may have missed some of the responses along the way so please forgive me if I post any redundanciesO

With that, please bear with me as I begin my ramblingsO you might want to grab a pint or three, I might stay awhile.

Let me introduce myself, if I mayO. My name is James Grattan, Iim 29 years old, and Iive been a MHB for about 15 years. Never got to see the now "classic" lineup but did get to see them live in i84 with supporting acts Mercyful Fate and Exciter. This was the first tour with the 4 piece lineup, and I must say it was one of the loudest shows Iid ever seen (or seen since, and Iive seen over 100 shows including Metallica, Pantera, Manowar, and tons of other metal actsO.). I had 2nd row seats at the tiny Auditorium Theater in Rochester, NY, and I truly would not have been surprised if the Marshalls had exploded in my face. Suffice it to say that this gig secured me as a Motorhead fan for life.

Iive been lucky enough to catch them live a few times since:

1/24/88 with Alice Cooper at the aforementioned Aud in Rochester

12/11/88 headlining with the Goo Goo Dolls (from Buffalo, NYO lately theyive found fame with ballads, but back then they rocked, believe it or not) supporting at the Renaissance Theater, also Rochester NY

8/8/91 as part of the Operation Rock and Roll package tour in Weedsport, NY. This was a great showO of the bands there I would count most among my faves, namely Motorhead, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper and Metal Church (as a side note I saw the original lineup of Metal Church at a club in Rochester back in 85 - this was another of my absolute favorite gigs of all time).

AndO. 7/21/95 with Black Sabbath (mach what? 12?) at the Water Street Music Hall in Rochester.

I canit believe I havenit seen Motorhead in two years!!!!! Another side note - I moved to Buffalo in 89 but always traveled to see Motorhead when they were close enough for my undergraduate budget, and as you can see, with only one exception, brought me home to Rochester every time. I lived in Buffalo for 8 years and never saw Motorhead there once.

Anyway, Iive left the east coast for Sin City, namely Las Vegas. Hope to see the bastards here or somewhere in this quadrant of the country soon.

There are a few subjects that came up in OS that Iid like to respond to, off the top of my head, so to speakO.

The Young Ones!!! An excellent show, and Iim proud to say I have eem all on tape. The "Bambi" episode is a classic in itis own right - having Motorhead as musical guest was the icing on the cake. Iid like to note that until Philthy rejoined in e87, this was the ONLY record of the Lemmy/Campbell/Wurzel/Taylor lineup. Pete Gill (late of Saxon, another excellent Brit Metal band) replaced Philthy for Orgasmatron and the subsequent tour. See the liner notes on No Remorse for support, which brings me to another commentO

The value of the leather clad "No Remorse?" I have no hard data but Iid hope that itis climbed past $30US, as thatis what I paid for it in 85. If you can find it at this price, BUY IT. (Hell, even at a higher price, buy it.. itis a classic!)

Non-Motorhead, but it came upO. Whatis said at the beginning of Maidenis "Still Life?" I read back around the time of the release of Piece of Mind that it was "Donit meddle with what you donit understand," spoken in French. This would make sense as at the time Maiden were under fire from all sorts of religious groups for the supposed satanism in "The Number of the Beast." I saw Maiden opening for Priest on the "Beast on the Road Tour," and there were some of those self same righteous pricks spilling their idiocy outside the venue. Morons. enuff saidO.

Iim sure I could think of more to say but Iill sign off. Iid just like to say that this is one of the best lists Iive ever seen, that Ace is doing a bang-up job and that the members all seem to be folks that Iid like to share a pint with and talk music with into the wee hours.

etil next timeO (or Hammersmith)

So I asked the cashier, "Who is this monstrosity?" , to which he replied "Primal scream." For some reason these Primal lot thought "Hmmm, let's do a cover of Motorhead, but let's change something, let us take the cool out of it. Somebody alert Lemmy for surely he did not have a hand in this!
